It is beginning. The NYS DOT culvert demolition/re-construction project is about to become a reality. The contract for the whole project should be awarded by the middle of April.
But prior to that start NYSEG will be making some major changes to underground gas pipes and overhead electric lines. Over the next 4 weeks the NYSEG chosen contractor, DDS, will be relocating the gas lines that currently run behind the buildings between Basin and Factory streets. The new line will run from the Verizon building on Basin Street, up to the corner by Gus’ Pizza Shop, and North under the sidewalk to and around the corner of Factory Street.
This will involve open digging (covered with metal plates) from near the Verizon building to the corner and directly in front of the pizza shop. There will also be smaller opening from there north to Factory Street, as they encounter and stabilize the water hookups from the mains to the local businesses.
As stated before, the gas line project will last about 4 weeks.
Also during that time NYSEG Electric will be placing 4 new poles near the existing light poles in front of and near the building that are being removed for the culvert project. These new poles will be 50 feet high in order to elevate the lines above the 3 buildings scheduled for demolition.
Both of these projects will result in reduced parking, sidewalk access and some traffic congestion. And remember, all of this is BEFORE the culvert project which could last the majority of the summer.
Sincerely,
Bud Shattuck
